Core Aeration

Core aeration is a great way to quickly improve the soil and loosen up hard compacted soil.  With all those holes the lawn and soil will breath better for months afterwards.  We have specialized machines that can poke 1000's of holes in your lawn to allow water and air to enter the soil and help the roots grow deeper.  The deeper the roots the less you'll need to water the lawn.  Using less water is typically a goal of many of our customers... ours too.  The cores of soil that are pulled from the yard are very beneficial too.  Healthy soil is full of tiny micro organisms so the cores that are pulled out will crumble and break apart then the tiny particles will work their way into the thatch of the lawn.  This is good, the micro organisms in the soil will start to each and consume organic matter including the thatch reducing the amounts of thatch too.  When the micro organisms eat they naturally poop which then improves the soil and provides a natural nutrient to the grass.

Core aeration can be done in the spring or fall but it's best done in the fall.  If it's done in the spring a lawn is more likely to have weeds and crabgrass.  The reason for this is when the soil warms up weed seeds are more likely to germinate.  With the holes in the spring the sun can penetrate the grass and warm up the soil... this little bit is just what weed seeds need to start growing.  Also a chemical crabgrass control is typically put down in the early season (usually mid March - mid April )  if the core aeration is done after the crabgrass control this will mess up the results of the crabgrass control.  The crabgrass pre emergent makes a thin layer in the soil similar to a piece of paper... when core aeration is done each of those holes is a penetration of the chemical barrier and crabgrass can grow there.  These are reasons we recommend core aeration in the fall.

If we core aerate in the fall there is another opportunity to improve the lawn by spreading grass seed in the lawn.  The grass seed will fall into the holes and germinate and grow which will make the lawn thicker and greener.  This can be done each year.  Some of our customers have us core aerate every spring and every fall to improve their soil.  Others have us core aerate their lawn just once per year... that is what is recommended but it will not hurt your lawn to be aerated twice per year.  Each time will improve the soil and allow water and air to go deeper into the soil.

Some aerators that are sold for homeowners to use do not put many holes into the soil but technically they do airify  or aerate the soil.  Some don't even pull out cores of soil, they simply poke holes into the soil.  As mentioned previously the cores are also very beneficial to a healthy lawn.  Professional core aerators will put the right amount of holes in the lawn and will pull nice cores of soil too.  Some people request that the lawn be core aerated in two different  passes or two different directions.  This may be because they had a bad experience in the past or they tried one of those homeowner machines to core aerate their lawn.  A professional machine will make really nice holes and enough of them to not need two passes.  If two passes are requested and someone wants to pay extra for the additional pass this can be arranged but again not really necessary.

When requesting core aeration it's important to mention if you have underground sprinklers or an invisible pet fence so they can be marked with flags (which we provide) so that we can steer around them.  Large roots of trees that are not deep will be fine and our machine will simply pass across them but we don't want to break any sprinkler heads or cut the wire for the pet fence.  Sometimes our customers will mark plastic drain covers from downspouts too with our flags so we can steer around those too.

Core aeration also increases the root system of the lawn by pruning grass roots and creating new areas for future development.  Softer soil, deeper roots and more roots... that sounds great!

The new holes will also allow the soil hold more water with all the tiny little pockets throughout the lawn.  This improves the drainage for lawns too when they have the tendency to puddle with water.  Thousands of little drainage holes benefit the entire lawn by allowing water to flow deep and get used by the roots... this helps make the lawn an efficient healthy environment.

Thatch is sometimes a problem for lawns too.  Thatch is a layer of living and dead organic matter that builds up gradually year after year.  Almost every lawn has thatch.  It's made up of stems, roots, rhizomes and grass blades.   If a lawn has a little bit of thatch it's ok because it will help keep the sunlight from drying out the soil.  It's better to have the sun beat down on a bit of thatch than to beat down directly on the bare soil.  Warm soil will allow weed seeds and crabgrass seeds to germinate.  Also if it has too much thatch then the water will get stuck in that spongy environment which can allow diseases and fungi to develop.  We don't want to have to use a fungicide to fix issues with diseases so keeping the soil healthy is a great plan, core aeration is one of the things we recommend to keep the lawn healthy.  Too much thatch can also prevent fertilizer from reaching the root system and might even trap insect controls from getting to grubs.  If a lawn has grubs and too much thatch then an insecticide is applied the insect control can get stuck in the thatch and the grubs will continue to damage the lawn.  Core Aeration can loosen up the soil, reduce the thatch and help fertilizer, water and insect controls reach the right place.

The end result of core aeration is a lawn that is thicker, greener, had less thatch and holds up to hot and dry weather better than before core aeration.
